Biography
Sam
Trickett was introduced to the game of poker in 2005 when he was
invited to a regular game held at a friends bar. After enjoying the
first night he went on to win the tournament regularly, including a
three week winning stretch. Upon realising he could make more in one
night at the poker tables than he could working for a whole week, he
went on the search for more serious games. He took his first shot at a
big tournament in Sheffield’s biggest casino and finished on the
bubble, an experience he credits as starting his obsession with the
game.
He
persisted in Sheffield and after two more cashless events, he took a
tournament down winning £1000 which was a huge confidence and bank
account booster. Around the same time he started playing online,
grinding $10 Sit ‘n’ Go’s with instant success. Early in 2007 he took a
shot at a GCBPT qualifier in Nottingham and took first place, winning
over £3,500 and a seat in the main event, which he finished in 11th,
just outside of the big money. It was after this he called Julian Thew,
who he had been playing with regularly in Nottingham and Sheffield and
asked advice on how to succeed as a pro.
Julians
advice was to start playing more regularly around the country, so they
started attending more tournaments together with Julian taking parts of
Sam’s action, enabling him to play more events. Sam took full advantage
of his opportunity and won over $20,000 between August and October
2007. Around this time, Dusk Till Dawn opened its doors and Sam was
introduced to players such as Paul ‘Action’ Jackson, who helped develop
his game further by talking through hands and staking him online. This
was a lucrative arrangement with Sam taking third in the DTD opening
invitation- only event for over $12,000, whilst making a good profit
for Paul through the staking deal.
In
December 2007 Sam made his first trip to Las Vegas. He played a 500
person super satellite and qualified for the 700 person main satellite
to the WPT Doyle Brunson Classic. With only a few thousand to his name
and the bubble soon approaching, he started feeling the pressure with
107 players left and $30,000 being paid for 100th. Even though he was
in the top 10 chips, two crucial pots cost him. The second hand was
against Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliot and after getting it all in with AK
against Ulliots Queens and spiking a King on the flop, Ulliot rivered a
Queen to bust Sam in 102nd, two short of the money.
In
June 2008 Sam decided to take another shot at Vegas, this time for the
WSOP. He played 2 events, busting near the bubble in both, but had a
huge bankroll booster when he took down the Monday $1k on Full Tilt.
This was his first tournament on the site, so winning straight off
caused some controversy from the regulars, which was quite amusing for
Sam. He then took a final shot by playing the $5,000 NL event and came
4th winning over $245,000. Coupled with some serious results playing
$10/$20 cash games, his first Vegas trip was a great success.
Upon
returning home, Sam’s focus turned back to the UK circuit. His aim was
to win a GUKPT title and in August he won the Luton main event taking
home over $210,000. He continued on the tour winning over $36,000
between November 2008 and Feb 2009, including two first place finishes
in Blackpool and London, before winning the inaugural 888.com London
Poker Circuit event for almost $14,000. Overall, this adds up to over
$550,000 tournament winnings in less than 2 years.
On top of this Sam
has been one of the most consistent winners in UK high stakes cash
games, winning 6-figure sums in just a few days.

Neil Channing (2008 Irish Poker Champion, CEO Black Belt Poker)I've
watched Sam Trickett develop as a poker player over a few years now. I
was first impressed by his determination. When his mates were out
partying in Vegas, on his first trip, he was stuck to his seat in
Bellagio's $5/$10 NLHE game for 24 hrs a day.
Since
that time he has developed into a hell of a tournament player with big
results on the GUKPT (won the main in Luton) and at the WSOP where he
was an unlucky fourth in last year's $5k 6 max event, the toughest
bracelet event of the series. Julian Thew (2007 EPT Baden and 2008 GUKPT Brighton champion)I've known Sam for about 4 years now - a guy who's always got time to chat & is a friendly face on the tour.
Sam
has moved up the through the ranks with ease & is now considered
one of the UK's brightest hopes. He has an impressive record in
tournaments & cash games, both online & live & i'm sure
that if he continues to put in the time & effort to his game many
more titles await.
I'm positive he would be a great representative to any potential sponsors.Sam Trickett - Grosvenor UK Poker Tour - Main Event winner
