The final table kicked off at noon local time
with eight expectant players. Per Linde was the huge chip leader but it
was John Eames of UK that got the best start at the final table. Eames
did not only get pocket kings once, he got them four times in the first
60 hands and he won every time, eliminating Juha Helppi in one of the
hands when Helppi was holding pocket queens. After
a quite fast start at the final table with players getting eliminated,
the game slowed down when it came down to three-handed. There were the
Swedes Michael Tureniec and Per Linde as well as Brit John Eames then
battling out for the title. Notable is that Tureniec and Eames also
played each other at a big event as recent as in November 2010 when they
finished in 1st and 2nd place respectively in the EPT Barcelona €2,000 Side Event. Three-handed,
the chips went back and forth until a huge hand of more than eight
million chips was played between Tureniec and Eames. The money went in
pre-flop with Tureniec holding Ace-King but with Eames being a slight
favourite holding pocket queens. The flop was safe for Eames but with a
king on the turn and on the river, the huge pot was sent to Tureniec and
leaving Eames with just ten big blinds. Eames came back though with
two double ups but when he ran into Tureniec’s Ace-Queen while he was
holding King-Jack, Eames could not outdraw and got eliminated in 3rd place. When
the heads-up started, Tureniec had a 2:1 chip lead against
fellow-countryman Per Linde. The heads-up play went on for a while with
Tureniec in command. Twice, Tureniec had Linde against the ropes but
both times Linde managed to double up. The first time Tureniec’s Ace-8
could not hold against Ace-Five suited for Linde since Linde got a flush
on the river. The second time, Tureniec ran his pocket sevens into the
pocket queens of Linde. It
finally came down to another coin flip to decide the winner. Tureniec,
who at this time was back at a 2:1 chiplead moved all-in with Ace-Jack
and Linde called with pocket sevens. A jack on the turn showed to be
enough and Michael Tureniec is the EPT Copenhagen Main Event winner! ”After
my second place in London 2008 it was time for a victory in an EPT Main
Event. To be able to win in Copenhagen which is considered as one of
the toughest events to win on the tour feels great” – says a very happy Michael Tureniec. Results of the EPT Copenhagen Main Event final table: 1. Michael Tureniec (Sweden), DKK 3,700,000 2.
